The Dark Knight Rises: 20 Mistakes Nolan Should Have Avoided

11. Batman's Return To Gotham

How exactly does Bruce Wayne get back to Gotham after escaping his pit prison? When he climbs his way to freedom, he's a fair old distance away from Gotham, penniless and without the amenities nor the logistical means to returning to the outskirts of the city. And then, even if he could have got there every entrance point into the city was sealed, either by the army or by Bane's men - in other words, one does not simply walk back into Gotham. The very idea that there might have been an alternative entrance point to Gotham (and presumably an exit one) totally undermines the central plot point that no-one could get in or out. Obviously the journey out of the pit has far more symbolic relevance for the character arc of Wayne, so the balance of focus should undoubtedly have been towards that part of his "return", but there could have at least been some kind of allowance made by the script for giving even the hint of explanation. Wayne probably has a network of connections around the world who will happily have assisted him in returning, and fed and clothed him along the way, but should we just be left to fill that blank in ourselves? No, we shouldn't.
