The Dark Knight Rises: 20 Mistakes Nolan Should Have Avoided

17. The "Robin" Revelation

It may have been a tongue-in-cheek nod to the worst kept secret in Batman film history, but the introduction of John Blake's full legal name was just too blatant, even for that intention. There was certainly some short-term enjoyment in the moment, but it didn't really feel appropriate for the tone of the rest of Nolan's trilogy, and while it was a rare moment of comic book fan-bait from the director in a trilogy which otherwise made a fairly conscious artistic effort to ignore a lot of the source it was certainly not entirely necessary. Blake would have become the next Batman (or so it is inferred), and no-one would have thought the story any poorer for the lack of Nolan's little trick and besides, no matter how hard anyone argues, Blake was already playing Robin, or at least a Robin-like figure, playing a more human side-kick for Batman - a bridge between the aloof superhero and those he protects. His biography drew upon elements of all three of the characters who have been Robin in the Batman comics, and his similarities to Bruce Wayne, coupled with his knowledge of his secret meant he was either going to end the film as Batman's heir or dead. So the revelation that his name was Robin was over-egging the pudding somewhat, and it might have been a little more artful to find out his biological parents were called Grayson or something similar.
