The Dark Knight Rises: 20 Mistakes Nolan Should Have Avoided

7. Bane Knew About Applied Sciences

We know how Bane got access to the sewers, and how he built a work-force underground in order to tunnel underneath Bruce Wayne's Applied Science division, in exchange for helping Ben Mendelsohn's Daggett in his hostile take-over attempt by bankrupting Wayne. But what we don't know, and what is a fairly sizable plot hole, is how exactly Bane knew where to find the Applied Science division's location, given that it was completely clandestine from everyone but Lucius Fox and Bruce Wayne. The answer is that Bane could have had no idea - and unless he spent the few years before striking it lucky digging multiple holes underneath Gotham, and in turn creating a knot of unsuccessful tunnels, there is no hint in the script as to how he discovered that location. Ra's Al Ghul didn't know about it, so he couldn't tell his daughter, who then obviously couldn't pass that non-information down to Bane, who couldn't have got the information from his man inside, Daggett, because the Division was "completely off the books". Perhaps this could have been explained - as I initially thought it was going to be - by the kidnapping (and torture) of Lucius Fox, which might have also given Bruce Wayne added reason for putting the suit back on, but it clearly wasn't meant to be. It might seem like a minor trifle, and one that can be completely forgivable considering the successes of other parts of the film, but it's hard to ignore such a necessary element in a plot with so many balls in the air. Nolan tried a slight of hand, encouraging us to ignore the missing jigsaw pieces, and to a certain extent he succeeded, but some of the holes were just too big to gloss over.
