The Dark Knight Rises: 5 Major Problems With The Plot

3. The Most Obvious and Literal Plot Device. Ever.

If Wayne Enterprises are looking for a name for their 'fusion reactor', I have a suggestion for them: The Plot Device. From the moment they went to visit this device, it was pretty obvious where the plot was going. The big scary device was so very, very obvious. I could probably question the science of this device, but I think it's best not to look too closely at the 'science' involved in superhero films €“ even ones celebrated for their 'gritty realism'. I will however say that is was awfully nice of Bruce Wayne's company to build the device with a lovely portable core that was able to be detached and used for a bomb. Here's a trip Bruce: if you don't want your reactor to be used as a weapon, don't make it so easy to do. Also it's worth mentioning that a '6 mile radius', as stated in the film isn't that impressive. The bombs dropped on Japan during World War Two had a radius of one mile and were woefully inefficient by today's standards. Since Bane is resourceful enough to take over an entire city, why didn't he just bring a bomb with him? I suppose you could say it is symbolism, Bruce creating the deadly plot device that threatens Gotham. I call it obvious storytelling.
