The Dark Knight Rises: Analysis And Ranking Of The Main Characters

Bruce Wayne (Batman)

"A hero can be anyone." Interestingly enough, his rise and fall of heroism is directly proportional to Blake's. He's fallen in the beginning, he rises to fight Bane, he falls in the pit, he rises from the pit, and he falls one last time to save Gotham. In conjunction, Blake starts off rising to confront Wayne, he falls when Gotham does, he rises in his finding of the bomb, he falls when he fails to protect the orphans, and he rises one last time on the platform in the cave. But enough of that. Bruce Wayne, being the titular character, wasn't actually as present as one would assume. If you think really hard about it, Wayne wasn't really that important to the story except for his reactor and at the very end after his episode in the pit - for the main protagonist that is. He served primarily as a way for the other characters to express themselves, but the focus never left his sights. Very similar to Bane, he embodied all the themes of the movie, but in a more obvious way, especially in the pit. Bruce Wayne was the despair and Batman was the hope, Wayne was the deception and Batman was the theatrics, Wayne was the upper class and Selina Kyle was the lower class - remember? Everything in this movie was balanced, even Talia in her deception. Wayne was pivotal in bringing all these crazy elements into a consistent movie. The only thing that was questionable was the cop out at the end. Bruce Wayne should have died. It would have made the entire movie worth it. Importance In Story: 8/10 Effect Of Character: 8/10 So there we have it. The six main characters and which of the six major themes they each represent - bolded words if you didn't realize. In case you're wondering Lucius Fox would have gotten a 1/10 in both rankings and Alfred Pennyworth would have gotten a 1.5/10 in story solely because of the end and a 3/10 in effect due to his speeches. There are some bold statements in this article so feel free to lash out. As a recap for easy pickings: Importance In Story (Most To Least): Talia, Bane = Bruce, Gordon, Selina, Robin Effect Of Character (Most To Least): Bane = Selina, Bruce = Robin, Gordon, Talia
