The Dark Knight Rises: How Many Oscars Will It Win?

Best Cinematography

Chance of a nomination = 9/10 Chance of a win = 7/10 One the film's safest bets for a nomination is Wally Pfister's glorious cinematography, which has seen him nominated in four of Nolan's previous films (Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Inception). Given the two previous Batman films got love here, it would seem surprising if Rises were the first film in the series not to. Considering its emphasis on IMAX technology (with 72 minutes of its screen time consisting of IMAX footage, a substantial leap on The Dark Knight), as well as the massive scale and focus on beautifully snow-kissed, chilly locales in the film's later sections, this is almost as sure a bet as the film is likely to get. That said, Pfister will face strong competition in Life of Pi, Django Unchained, The Master and especially Terrence Malick's latest, To the Wonder.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Chance of a nomination = 2/10 Chance of a win = 0/10 Given that The Dark Knight failed to garner a nomination with its wacky Joker makeup, Rises has virtually no chance of success here, given its makeup largely consists of the previous flourishes - Batman's black eye work - with some very minor touches on the new characters, such as the scarred skin on Bane's body and Catwoman's sexy lipstick. The category has been revised to include hairstyling, but it will do little to enhance the film's chances as, simply, nothing stands out. This category will be crowded by Lincoln, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, and possibly Prometheus and The Hobbit.
