The Dark Knight Rises Sequel: 3 Actors Who Could Play Hugo Strange
Perfect Casting Choice?Strange has never been used in the Batman movie universe. This hasn't stopped his name being thrown around whenever a new project comes along, including Christopher Nolan's mega successful Batman reboot trilogy and at point fans thought this could even be the role Tom Hardy was being eyed for. Until recently however Strange has not been seen outside of the animated series. All that could change however given Strange's turn in Arkham City. So imagine if you will a new Batman movie. The villain is going to be Hugo Strange. You have your Batman and maybe even your Robin, but who's going to play the villain of the piece? Here's our top picks.
1. Robin Williams
Robin Williams was famously linked to the role for years and if we're honest he would probably still be great in the role as we all know Williams plays crazy really well. But how would Williams look? Would he shave his head for the role? Would he need to? Just take a look at Williams in his One Hour Photo role and tell us whether the former Mork from Ork would make a good Professor Strange. And don't forget how freakin' scary he was in Insomnia playing a deranged psychologist! Sound familiar? Robin Williams is a huge fan of the Batman comics and has lobbied for a role in one of the movies for over 20 years. He was famously usurped as The Joker in Tim Burton's original 1989 movie and again missed out on the chance to play The Riddler in Batman Forever. Surely with his star power and his Hollywood stroke the man also known as Mrs Doubtifre could land his dream role sooner or later. 2. Stanley Tucci
Not convinced by Williams? Then how about Stanley Tucci? He's a man with the right look and has great acting chops. He's also pretty relevant to today's young audiences thanks in no small part to his involvement with The Hunger Games. What's that? He looks too happy? Don't let those smiling eyes fool you. Tucci has played some of the most horrible men on the planet, including Adolf Eichmann - a Nazi responsible for the extermination of millions of lives. His mellow exterior is the perfect set up for a character that appears sane on the outside but is a psychotic, drooling animal utterly obsessed with capturing, defeating and revealing Batman. 3. Bryan Cranston
Another of our choices though would have to be Bryan Cranston looking exactly like he does in Breaking Bad! We're sure you'll agree that Walter White's alter ego would be the perfect casting choice for this role. He has the beard, the shaved head, the glasses and the bad ass stare of a man with nothing to lose. Cranston is by far the WhatCulture Hugo Strange of choice. Sure, he's a great comic actor (as evidenced in Malcolm in the Middle) but Cranston has proved himself to be a highly versatile performer and we're convinced he'd be able to go toe to toe with Batman, at least intellectually and in terms of sheer intensity. Breaking Bad has changed the course of Cranston's career - how about he starts to concentrate on breaking the Bat instead? What's the likelihood of seeing Strange in a future movie? Before Bane was announced as the big bad for Dark Knight Rises our dear Hugo was actually believed to be the villain to watch out for. You see, the original story was alleged to be based on the 1990's comic book Prey which featured Strange chasing down a fugitive Batman on the tax payers dollar. Given the way The Dark Knight ended this would have made perfect sense. Hell, Strange doesn't even need to be the main heel in a Batman movie. He could be a criminal profiler obsessed with Bat Brains, or he could be the one pay rolling a much bigger, tougher foe to take Batman out. By having Strange work with the police he would be the perfect advocate for a man like James Gordon, a beacon of virtue in a corrupt police force. Alas, it was never to be and Hugo Strange remains a relatively unknown character outside of the comic book community. That doesn't mean however we wont be seeing him on the big screen sooner or later, especially if the next wave of Batman movies are as grounded in 'realism' as Christopher Nolan's were.
