The Dark Knight Trilogy: 10 Best Villain Moments

3. "But I Watched You Die"

Ra's Al Ghul is a great Batman villain, but was something of an unusual choice as the main villain for a film which would reboot the franchise. Of course Nolan used R'as to great effect, but there were some complaints that the character was fairly different to that of the comics. His motives were pretty similar to his comic counterpart, being the head of an organisation of assassins hell-bent on bringing balance to the world, but one of the big things about Ra's is his immortality - which Nolan appeared to swerve in Batman Begins. "But, is Ra's Al Ghul immortal? Are his methods supernatural?" asked "Ducard." "Or cheap parlor tricks to conceal your true identity, Ra's," replies Bruce. Of course the 'Ra's who died in the monastery was merely a decoy, and the real R'as couldn't really be immortal, could he? Well, as we see in The Dark Knight Rises, R'as appears to Bruce in a dream/vision as he is held captive in the pit. Bruce asserts that he watched Ra's die, to which Ra's replies: "there are many forms of immortality." It was cool that Nolan decided to have R'as reappear and hint that he is, in a fashion, immortal - appearing as a vision to Bruce, a la Obi Wan Kenobi, albeit an evil one.
