Over the years, there's been a lot of speculation in fan circles that Nolan was intending to use the Joker in another film following The Dark Knight, but had to change his plans due to actor Heath Ledger's untimely death.

But this idea - that Nolan had planned to make sequels to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight - simply isn't true, and something that's mentioned a few times throughout the documentary is that Nolan and his collaborators took a "one film at a time" approach, focusing on making great individual movies, rather than getting lost in the bigger picture of a trilogy.

For example, Nolan says that he "didn't hold anything back for a third film" when making The Dark Knight, which means that he never had plans to bring back the Joker in The Dark Knight Rises.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
