The Dark Tower Reviews: 9 Early Reactions You Need To See

8. The Characters Are One-Dimensional

The Dark Tower Idris Elba
Warner Bros.
“The deeply flawed and compellingly tragic characters that King created are one-dimensional in their on-screen adaptations because the motivations that give them that depth are completely lost to the wind." - IGN
"The cinematic version of The Man in Black is an awful character. He just shows up everywhere out of the blue, whispers words like “stop breathing,” and whoever hears these words acts on his command. He seems to have unlimited, unexplained powers – yet still sends untrustworthy lackeys out to do his bidding, then gets mad when they fail." - UPROXX

This could potentially be the movie's worst offence, condensing two iconic literary characters down to a pair of quarreling archetypes.

Roland and the Man in Black are complex, layered characters with more hidden mysteries than the government warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

From the look of things, there are a few lost arcs in The Dark Tower... character arcs, that is - it sounds like the film has failed to flesh out either of its leads or convey their motivations to the audience.
