The Dirt Review: 5 Ups & 7 Downs

5. Pete Davidson's Performance

Pete Davidson is disarmingly great on SNL and a very engaging man all round. Unfortunately, as A and R man Tom Zutaut, he sticks out like a sore thumb. A sore thumb pretending to be a nerd in a poor wig.

His performance is way too much like Peter Davidson has wandered into the film with an agenda to add some comedy (he literally gets ball punched for a prat fall at one point) and it's completely ruinous for the immersion factor. Which is saying something in a movie that literally breaks the fourth wall on purpose a lot.

This is not to say that he's a particularly bad actor, this just wasn't the role. He's not entirely believable as the comedy target and there's an SNL-style painful awareness of where the camera is that sticks around too much.
