The Dream Team should host the Oscars

Hugh Jackman has turned down the chance to host the Oscars for a second year running. I say go with Ricky Gervais and pals for a multiple Oscar hosting team!

I'm not sad to hear that Hugh Jackman has turned down the offer to return for a second Oscar hosting gig. I know my opinion is not the one shared by the majority but I thought he was pretty woeful as the Oscar host this year. Clean cut, very rigid. Very boring. But I did praise the Academy for trying someone different and I really hope they are inclined to do the same here again. In fact, one idea that I first heard from Ricky Gervais in the lead up to the announcement of who would host last year's Oscars was for a multiple hosting team involving four of the best loved comedians on film and television today. Why not go for that? He name checked himself... obviously and his pals Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. The fab four.

stevecarrellR_468x446The Oscars were last hosted by a team in 1986 when Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan hosted the event. Isn't it about time to try multiple hosts again? Out of all the hosts this decade, Jon Stewart probably did the best job when he hosted the Oscars in 2005 and 2007 and we all heard this week that Gervais will host this year's Golden Globes which will probably be a spotlighted audition as to whether he can be trusted to host a major awards show, live, with his reputation for saying what he thinks. Though of course that event comes after the announcement of who will be hosting this year's Oscars so it can only be an audition for the following year. It would also be pretty cool to have a Brit in there, seeing as though we usually take up a fair number of the nominations in all categories each and every year. Carell is funniest when in a team and he gets on so well with these guys that I think he would be a major hit and Stephen Colbert would bring a bit of new, fresh blooded comedy to the mix. He's quick witted, often quite articulate and has so much energy and enthusiasm that he could really liven up the usual tedious bits of the ceremony. Otherwise, I say go with Tom Hanks. He's probably the most loved American actor of my lifetime and man whenever he brightens up talk shows he's the funnest guy on the planet. He has the respect of the film world and given how much he does each year for the Oscars, it's kind of surprising he has never hosted it before.
