The Dumbest Rise Of Skywalker Moment Was Always In Colin Trevorrow's Script

In every version of the film, this scene could have used a lot more explanation.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you will know that right at the end of The Rise of Skywalker when all hope seems lost, a massive fleet of ships from across the galaxy suddenly appear to assist the Resistance. Visually it's a cool shot, and there's neat easter eggs like the ships from Rebels and The Mandalorian being seen hidden among the swarm.

However, the scene doesn't really make a lot of sense. This has been one of the many complaints made against the film, and specifically the version of the script written by Chris Terrio and J.J. Abrams. It's one of those moments that cynics have pointed to as definitive "proof" that the story was heavily changed late in production.

But judging by the recently leaked script penned by Colin Trevorrow, this scene was always going to be in the film.

The scene is slightly different in Trevorrow's script, admittedly, but for the most part it's the same. A call for help is sent across the galaxy and a seemingly infinite armada of ships appears out of thin air at just the right moment. In Trevorrow's version, however, Lando isn't the one who goes to get everyone. In this version of the story, he was actually on board the Millenium Falcon when the rest of the ships arrive on Exegol.

A major reason the scene doesn't make sense is that in the prior film in the saga, The Last Jedi, the Resistance makes a similar call for help that is met with zero response. The Resistance is left to their own devices in the climax of that film, and realistically, it should have been the same in The Rise of Skywalker.

The Rise of Skywalker, in both its final form and Trevorrow's script, don't do enough work to show the audience what has changed, if anything, between these calls that now allowed for so many people to answer it.

At least in the final version of the story, you can imagine Lando working his magic and convincing people who wouldn't have supported the Resistance otherwise. In Trevorrow's script, you don't even have that. Fans have made their displeasure with the movie we received clear, but it doesn't seem like we were ever going to get a great version of this movie, unfortunately.
