The Expendables 3 - 13 Easter Eggs & References You Need To Know

6. Attack Force Z

Villainous Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson) is said to be a former SASR (Special Air Sevice Regiment) operative, and though at first this seems like the usual mindless filler dialogue to establish how decorated the enemy is, it is, in fact, a nod to Attack Force Z, a little-known 1982 Australian action film starring Gibson (alongside Sam Neill), released shortly after Mad Max 2 and before Mad Mel got his big break in Hollywood. In the movie, Gibson similarly played an SASR member, and considering how much Stallone loves ribbing his co-stars, we imagine this was probably added at his suggestion rather than Gibson's, who would likely rather forget the movie ever existed.
