The Father Review: 5 Ups And 2 Downs

3. Up: Subtle Production Design

The Father Olivia Colman Anthony Hopkins
Sony Pictures Classics

As Anthony begins to lose his hold on reality, the flat he believes is his will change ever so slightly from scene to scene. This clues the audience in that some time has passed or that we're in a completely different location. It is impressive how much attention to detail is placed into each scene to highlight this.

From pictures on the wall, to a slight change in furniture, every alteration is subtle and for some won't even be noticeable because Anthony never draws attention to it. The choice to keep it subtle is brave in some ways because not everyone will appreciate the work that is being done to alter every frame.

There are several small details in The Father that are done to shape Anthony's reality and of all of them, the shifting production design is perhaps the most unnecessary but that's what makes it so special. It is an achievement the filmmakers should be proud of.
