The Favourite Review: 8 Ups & 1 Down

1. The Classical Music Soundtrack

The Favourite doesn't feature a traditional, bespoke musical score, instead making superb use of existing classic music from the likes of J.S. Bach, Handel, Schubert, Vivaldi and many more.

Much like Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, these perfectly composed pieces are used to ironic effect, juxtaposed against the tawdriness of the characters and their schemes. It's all too apt that such a beautiful movie is filled to the brim with so many ugly human beings.

Though the use of existing songs means The Favourite can't be nominated for Best Original Score, the pieces are employed to terrific effect both in terms of heightening the suspense and also the hilarity.
