The Favourite Review: 8 Ups & 1 Down
7. Yorgos Lanthimos' Off-Kilter Direction
Though Lanthimos does indeed rein things in a little from his prior works, that does nothing to impact the effectiveness of his direction.
His detached, almost alien approach to human interaction continues to be fascinating and reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick: it's a coldness that's not appropriate to all types of movie, but it works splendidly here.
From bizarre, unexpected shot selections to intentionally tonally jarring moments played for absurd laughs, not to mention his incredible work with his cast, Lanthimos yet again proves himself a master of his craft.
Whether working with more subtle, grim material or broader and more outlandish fare such as this, he knows what he wants and how to get it.
Lanthimos does such a fine job of making all of his movies feel "off" in a way that's so incredibly compelling, such that they don't really feel like anything else out there. The Favourite is no exception.
