The Girl In The Spider's Web Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs

6. It's Surprisingly Tame
Considering how graphic and vivid the previous Dragon Tattoo movies have been - especially Fincher's one - it's shocking just how tame and utterly lacking in visceral appeal this film is.
There's no nudity and very little blood, with most of the movie's R-rating stemming from its abundance of profanity.
Given director Fede Álvarez's (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) prior experience with lurid subject matter, quite why he opted for such a "tasteful" approach is anyone's guess.
The result is a film that could probably pass as a PG-13/12A with just a few quick edits, and so you have to wonder why Sony didn't just do that in order to secure themselves a larger audience.
Without the series' trademark uncompromising approach to sex and violence, the already relatively generic thriller template feels even more stock and forgettable.
