The Greatest Showman Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs
3. Rebecca Ferguson's Blatantly Obvious Lip-Syncing
Rebecca Ferguson plays the supporting role of Jenny Lind, a famous European opera singer who joins Barnum's troupe to bring something "real" to the show.
The irony, ultimately, is that Ferguson's singing is all dubbed over by Loren Allred, and during her character's center-piece performance ("Never Enough"), it's comically obvious that Ferguson isn't singing.
For starters, Allred's singing voice sounds absolutely nothing like Ferguson's spoken voice, and Ferguson's attempts to lip-sync aren't terribly convincing.
It's all the more problematic as Never Enough is meant to be a major emotional turning point for Barnum, yet it's hard not to be distracted by Ferguson's off-kilter work.
She's absolutely radiant in her spoken dramatic scenes, but in this sequence? A total dud, sadly.
