The Grudge Review: 2 Ups & 8 Downs

Ups...

2. Andrea Riseborough's Solid Performance

The Grudge Andrea Riseborough
Sony Pictures Releasing

Andrea Riseborough is an extremely talented and frequently under-appreciated actress, and while she's absolutely wasted in this film along with the rest of her co-stars, she does nevertheless manage to give a compelling performance all the same.

As worn-down protagonist Detective Muldoon, Riseborough aptly conveys the stress and emotional exhaustion that both her job and the supernatural events in her midst cause.

She's good enough, in fact, that she somehow manages to emerge pretty much unscathed, bringing a pathos and plausibility to a film that's otherwise largely bereft of it.

Hopefully the next time she shows up in a major studio movie, though, there might be a more fittingly fruitful part waiting for her.
