Unlike most of the entries in this list being centred on specific scenes, this entry is one that can only be seen if you watch both films in order. Bilbo Baggins, a mere Hobbit of Bag End that was content with his unremarkable life in the idyllic Shire, reluctantly becomes the burglar for a company of dwarves on their quest to slay a dragon. Bilbo becomes more courageous, confident and aware of the world he lives in during the course of the films and, thanks in part to the long running times of the films so far, you're able to see the step-by-step transformation of Bilbo as he partakes in his greatest adventure. There was far less focus on the character in The Desolation Of Smaug, but even so, changes to Bilbo's personality due to his growing attachment to the One Ring become more and more obvious as the film goes on. Freeman has done a marvellous job so far of making subtle adjustments in the characters tone, outward behaviour and personality, and you're starting to see the eventual toll that it will have on his psyche by the time that the Fellowship is formed. There is still one more film to go yet though, so expect some far greater changes to come. What other moments in the two Hobbit films do you think are great? Are there any here that you disagree with? Let us know in the comments below.
