The Hobbit: 10 Dumbest Character Decisions
5. Smaug Just Kept Talking
It has become such an overused trope in TV and movies that the villain either explains their plan or likes to hear the sound of their own voice so much, that it has almost become a trope to reference that they won’t be conforming to the original trope.
This wasn’t the case for Smaug the Magnificent, as he really did love the sound of his own voice. I mean, who didn’t, Benedict Cumberbatch gave an incredible performance as the fire drake from the north, but maybe if he knew when to shoot fire from his mouth rather than words he wouldn’t have died when he did.
Firstly, he engaged in conversation with Bilbo, the trespasser and thief in the mountain. All he had to do was incinerate the hobbit before giving him the chance to escape, but instead he wasted his opportunity.
Then, when he came face to face with Bard on the top of the bell tower, he could have easily killed him immediately.
However, instead he decided to talk for a while, to gloat and boast that Bard would never kill him, thus giving the bowman the chance to get ready to kill him. Bard was nowhere near ready to fire the arrow when Smaug spotted him, but the dragon just couldn’t help himself and wound up dead because of it.
