The Hobbit: 10 Times Peter Jackson Ruined A Character

4. Smaug's Chase Sequence

Although the Hobbit was criticised for its over reliance on CGI, it did include two incredibly well done digital characters. Andy Serkis gave the world another memorable performance as Gollum. But we were also given Benedict Cumberbatch's interoperation of Smaug. Although digitally enhanced, his vocal performances was mesmerising. He managed to capture both Smaug's sly mind and his imposing character perfectly.

And that's not to mention how detailed and stunning the character was visually. The design for Smaug took months, the team went through a long, painful process, pinning down exactly how to bring Tolkien's most famed antagonist to life.

So it was a shame that Jackson wasted the character on another ill advised and poorly executed chase sequence. The last 20 minutes of the Desolation of Smaug was a tedious romp through the Lonely Mountain - with dwarves swinging on chains, and surfing on rivers of gold. That's not to mention the ridiculous moment Smaug squared up to a giant, golden Christmas chocolate.
