The Hobbit: 20 Blunders That Ruined An Unexpected Journey

14. Frodo Cameo

In the very first minutes of The Hobbit, Elijah Wood makes an absolutely superfluous, hilariously perfunctory cameo appearance as a younger Frodo Baggins, in what essentially amounts to Peter Jackson's rather lame-brained attempt to try and tie the film into The Lord of the Rings mythos, as though the humongous advertising campaign, recurring characters who actually matter and familiar setting weren't enough to do that. The scene in question is undeniably awkward and shoehorned, as Frodo has a quick chat with Uncle Bilbo (at this point, of course, played by Ian Holm) about one of his adventures. This never occurred in the novel, and was entirely fabricated by Jackson and his co-writers to service salivating fans, yet ironically, it probably ended up annoy them in the process given how condescending and cynical it seems.
