The Hobbit: 5 Reasons Why Tolkien Fans Can Still (Kind of) Enjoy It

2. Martin Freeman

The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is a bumbling, fussy character, who somehow becomes a hero. I think Ian Holm portrayed this very well in the Lord of the Rings movies. Martin Freeman, instead, is sarcastic, self-deprecating, awkward and still somehow cool, which is how he plays Bilbo. As a result, we get a Tim Canterbury of The Office, or Dr. Watson of Holmes, instead of the lovable Hobbit we all know. So yes, the Bilbo of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey doesn€™t really capture that elusive essence of Baggins. But if we aren€™t getting Bilbo, it€™s nice that we at least get Martin Freeman.
