7. Golf
Did you know that golf is based on the exploits of a hobbit? It is, according to Tolkien. In The Hobbit, Gandalf defends his choice of Bilbo as a burglar by discussing the hidden ferocity of hobbits. The books narrator agrees, and tells a story of a particularly famous Hobbit, Bandobras Bullroarer Took. In the Battle of Greenfields, a group of goblinsled by King Golfimbulattacked the Shire. They were stopped by hobbits under the command of the Bullroarer, who was so fierce that he charged the goblin king and knocked the goblins head off with a swing of his club. The head fell down a rabbit hole, and the celebrating hobbits created a game based on this incident, naming it golf. This is one of the more light-hearted parts of The Hobbit (although it does include a decapitation) and I could easily see it being passed over: its kind of goofy, not crucial to the plot, and presented by the narrator. But a cut sceneduring Gandalfs defense of Bilboshowing the battle and its outcome could be brilliant. Throw in a Samuel L. Jackson-in-Inglourious Basterds-esque narration, and this could be one of the greatest movies ever made.
