3. It's Not A Musical
The Hobbit is essentially a children's book - or it is at least aimed at a younger readership than The Lord of The Rings trilogy - and thanks to that creative decision by Tolkien, most of the main characters spontaneously burst into song at various points throughout the novel. Somewhat thankfully, this doesn't happen in the film, though two songs do remain - both sang by the part of dwarves during their unwanted stay at Bag-End, the first mocking Bilbo for his protection of his mother's crockery, and the other telling of their forthcoming quest to Erebor. Both will feel somewhat alien to fans of the LOTR film trilogy, and those who haven't read the book - and indeed to more conventional modern cinema audiences - but they work quite well in transmitting who the dwarves are, and something of their culture. The other songs, including the Rivendell welcome song, never made the cut.
