The Hobbit vs The Lord of the Rings

6. The Party

It is difficult to separate the company of Thorin Oakenshield from the Fellowship of the Ring.

On the one hand, the Fellowship represents unity amongst the free people of Middle Earth. It builds on past friendships whilst simultaneously forming new ones that grow as the journey progresses. In short, it is the epitome of a successful global affairs movement. Whilst, conversely, Thorin's company represents the plight of the underdog - a band of brothers whose interests are one and the same.

In fact, so impressive are both parties that it is nigh-on impossible to suggest that one is 'better' than the other. For their various expeditions, both are as vital as the other - when called upon, each party member justifies their importance amongst the others.
