The Hunger Games: 10 Biggest Changes From The Books

2. Thresh€™s Death

Of all the characters Katniss comes up against inside the games, Cato is easily the worst of the lot. The cocky and muscular tribute is quickly set up as the games villain in the first film, introduced as an unrelenting killer willing to snap the neck of an ally if that helps him towards victory. As Katniss is hunted during the first games it is clear how evil Cato is and how he dominates the rest, especially when he orders the girl to murder the tribute who has foolishly built and lit a fire, leading the group to her. As the others die, the stage is of course set for Katniss to come up against Cato at some point. During all this, the other District 11 tribute Thresh saves Katniss€™ life as repayment for how she protected and cared for Rue during the games. After he saves Katniss, he is murdered, and in the book it is suggested that Cato is his killer. In the film however, the dogs that the game creators have designed to hunt the remaining contestants murder Thresh instead of Cato. This is a bad choice by the filmmakers because this minor difference means that Cato€™s murder of Thresh does not set up the stage for the intense final showdown, meaning it actually loses some of its poignancy while Katniss€™ motivations are also decreased somewhat.
