The Hunger Games: 10 Biggest Changes From The Books

9. Snow Gets A Granddaughter

This is another big change from the books that fleshes out the President Snow character and gives us an insight into his life. As we have already mentioned, because the book is told from Katniss€™ perspective, we don€™t get to see how Snow reacts to events or what he does behind the scenes. Similarly, we do not know much about his life. Although in Mockingjay we are made aware that the President has a granddaughter who would be of age to compete in the Hunger Games were she a resident of the Districts rather than the Capitol, we never meet her because Katniss doesn€™t. In the film however, we get to meet to meet her and see what she is like through a couple of scenes in which she converses with her grandfather. This is an excellent decision by the filmmakers as it allows the viewers to see a more human side to President Snow that we don€™t get in the books and let€™s face it; a multidimensional villain is always better. At the same time, she emphasises the excessive differences between the districts and the Capitol, while also demonstrating how thoroughly Katniss is winning over the people as she is sporting the same hairstyle as Katniss because everyone at school is doing the same. That is a clear indication to Snow how much of a hero Katniss has become and likely plays into his decisions against her as well.
