THE INBETWEENERS Takes £13 Million Opening, Becomes Biggest UK Comedy Of All Time

The big screen version of the popular E4 sitcom beats Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason as the UK's biggest opening weekend comedy EVER!

The big screen version of the popular E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners took an enormously impressive £13.2 million record breaking haul on it's first five days of release to become the UK's biggest opening weekend comedy of all time. £13.2 million is the equilivant of around $21 million in the U.S. so effectively those young British lads have raked in more money from the size of a U.S. state than the bigger budgeted and much more pushed Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night did on their respective opening weekends in the considerably larger country of America. Of course the numbers can be manipulated a little as the film did open in the UK on Wednesday morning so they had a few more days in theatres but without the advent of 3D, The Inbetweeners have basically smashed the UK, the same way as The Hangover guys did in the U.S. - hitting a much younger teen/young adult demographic and importantly attracting a large number of female fans in the same way as The Hangover guys did. The Inbetweeners movie takes the previous biggest ever opening weekend record away from Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason in 2004 (£10.4 million... but I'm not sure if that was a five day release). For the record, the third biggest UK comedy of all time is Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2005 (£9.4 million). All four Inbetweener lads have publically stated their desire to end the series after this film, citing that they had grown-up now and the characters had nowhere else to go but with a whopping hauling like this, another movie seems highly possible. I mean it really wouldn't be difficult (and I haven't yet seen The Inbetweeners so I don't know if they leave the narrative strand open) but sending one of the four to University and having the others gate-crash a freshers weekend seems to be the obvious move. What do you guys think? Were you one of the thousands who saw The Inbetweeners in the U.K. this weekend? Where would you like the series to go next, or should they go out on top?
