The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Nazgûl
7. Gandalf Took On All Nine Ringwraiths At Weathertop
We were shown our first real action sequence in the Fellowship of the Ring, when Aragorn defended the four hobbits from the Nazgûl at Amon Sûl. It was a great moment for our protagonist. Aragorn single handedly took on five of Ringwraiths in an impressive display of heroism.
But Peter Jackson omitted a scene that would have been far more spectacular. When the Fellowship eventually arrive at Rivendell, Gandalf reveals that he had pursued the Ringwraiths after his escape from Isengard. At first they had been fearful, but at night they attacked him in the same spot they later stabbed Frodo.
Gandalf was forced to fight all nine Ringwraiths throughout the night, summoning all his magical powers, and eventually setting the hilltop on fire to drive his enemies away. This explained the scorch marks Aragorn found on Weathertop when he and the hobbits first took shelter there.
Considering that Gandalf was still only the Grey Wizard a this point, it casts the Nazgûl in a pretty poor light.
