The Many Saints Of Newark Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

4. The Excellent Ensemble Cast

The film's cast is an absolutely embarrassment of riches, to be clear, and basically everyone brings their A-game.

Beyond Alessandro Nivola and Michael Gandolfini, both of them giving spectacular performances, Vera Farmiga is an absolute hoot as Tony's melodramatic mother Livia, fake nose and all, while Michela De Rossi makes a potentially star-making appearance as Dickie's young stepmother Giuseppina.

Elsewhere, Jon Bernthal gives a typically brilliant Jon Bernthal performance as Tony's father Johnny Boy, while Corey Stoll is slyly hilarious as Uncle Junior, Ray Liotta gives his most on-fire performance in years as Dickie's father Aldo, and Billy Magnussen is surprisingly spot-on as Paulie Walnuts.

The only downsides? Some might find John Magaro's scrunchy-faced performance as Silvio a little too much of a caricature, and Samson Moeakiola has barely any screen time at all as Big Pussy.

Otherwise, this is an absolute joy to watch in basically every moment, simply to see extremely talented actors swinging for the fences.
