"Matrix" is an interesting word because it has drastically different meanings depending on the context it is used in. In mathematics, it refers to an array of numbers and symbols in a tabular array, which sounds similar to how Morpheus' crew read The Matrix's code.

In William Gibson's novel, Neuromancer, (which inspired many of the film's themes), the matrix is a virtual reality database.

But according to the directors, the simulated reality in the film was called The Matrix as a reference to its original Latin definition, "womb".

The name seems fitting since the inhabitants of The Matrix are encased in cocoons, yet to experience the real world. Morpheus mentions that Neo has officially been born once he was released from his "womb".
