The Menu Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
6. Anya Taylor-Joy's Superb Lead Performance
Anya Taylor-Joy wraps up what's been quite the incredibly year for her with a killer lead performance as Margot - effectively the audience surrogate character given how little interest she has in gastronomy compared to her fawning partner.
We share her incredulity at the highfalutin nonsense unfolding around her, and then the shock as the scenario becomes increasingly horrifying.
She's immediately sympathetic from the moment we see her enduring the pompous fancies of her windbag boyfriend, and remains an easy-to-root-for character throughout.
There's also a little more to her than there first appears to be, and Taylor-Joy pulls that aspect of the character off gracefully. All in all, she's the anchor that carries the movie, and impressively manages to stick out in a mighty ensemble doing a lot of good work.
