The Mummy: 10 Monster Films It Must Improve Upon

8. Godzilla (1998)

Even though Godzilla is a 400 foot tall amphibious tyrannosaurus mutant, he’s somehow capable of appearing in the middle of New York City at will and playing peek-a-boo with multi-million dollar jets. If he wants to avoid being nuked, he moves his head slightly and the pilots destroy the Chrysler building by mistake.

And then – just like Keyser Soze – he’s gone.

Unfortunately, the human characters aren’t nearly as interesting and when the script runs out of things for these “kooky” and “eccentric” types to do, they pose in front of product placements for Swatch and Blockbuster. Meanwhile, the viewer starts to realize that this sort of goofiness was all very well in Independence Day, but now Roland Emmerich is seriously pressing his luck.

Luckily for the director, bad movies fail upwards in Hollywood: with a $375 million worldwide gross, Godzilla was 1998’s 3rd biggest movie, just behind Armageddon and Saving Private Ryan.
