The Old Guard Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The Solid Ensemble Cast

Though The Old Guard is certainly The Charlize Theron Show, she's nevertheless aided by the efforts of a strong supporting cast.

KiKi Layne, as the team's newcomer Nile, is an especially alluring addition, getting to not only trade blows with Theron in the early going but also share with her some of the movie's more affecting dramatic scenes.

Elsewhere the ever-great Matthias Schoenaerts is a hoot as former Napoleonic soldier Booker, while the group is rounded out by Aladdin's Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli as Joe and Nicky, a charming gay couple whose love has spanned centuries.

Together, these performers bring plenty of added value to the table, and like Theron, try to make the most of the inconsistent material they're working with.
