The Outsider Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

3. Tadanobu Asano's Entertaining Performance
Tadanobu Asano gives by far the best performance in this movie as Kiyoshi, providing Nick's in to the Yakuza world and effectively keeping him safe.
Kiyoshi is a far more interesting character than Nick to the extent that, in a less cynical movie, he'd surely be the protagonist. He's got more compelling issues to deal with as a top-tier member of the Shiromatsu family, and the actor actually puts some real, honest-to-God emotion into his performance, compared to Leto's oddly boring portrayal.
Sadly his involvement in the story ultimately peters out before the film's end in order to give Leto the all-important limelight, and it's tremendously disappointing.
