The Russos Say Captain America: Civil War Is The Avengers "Deconstructed"

With Captain America: Civil War currently seeing the Avengers battling it out amongst themselves on the big screen, more details have emerged about the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War which sheds new light on the introduction of Thanos to the franchise.

In an exclusive interview for Deadline, the Civil War directors discussed their intentions to make Avengers: Infinity War the "culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe" as well as their agenda to shatter the Avengers and seeing how the threat from Thanos brings them together again. Whether we'll see more of that before Thanos arrives further in Phase 3 remains to be seen, but it seems possible, with rumours suggesting deaths are coming.

Joe Russo explained their efforts to keep the franchise fresh: "We felt like the smartest thing that we could do with the movie was to deconstruct the genre rather than to keep repeating that three-act structure where hero has a problem in the first act. Introduce villain. Hero and villain come into conflict in the second act. Third act, hero beats villain. We worked really hard to subvert that, with twists in the movie that are about subversion and playing with the fact that you are conditioned to believe that that€™s where we€™re going to go. And then we pull the rug out from under you."

Infinity War will mark the official arrival of Thanos to the franchise, with Josh Brolin taking on the role. With a number of lacklustre comic book villains in recent movies, for instance the poorly received inclusion of Doomsday in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, the writers of Infinity War are keen to make sure Thanos is a fan-pleasing addition to the cast with as much depth as existing characters.

Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely appeared in an interview for IGN to discuss the role they envisioned Thanos playing in the movie. Markus explained, "he is a fully-fledged character - this movie will not work unless you feel for Thanos because otherwise he's just a big purple madman. That's fun for about 25 minutes then it's just a big headache."

With Captain America: Civil War enjoying huge support from critics and fans alike, it looks like Avengers: Infinity War is in very good hands, as Disney/Marvel Studios continue to lead the pack in quality comic book adaptations.

Work on the screenplay began in December 2015, while shooting is scheduled to begin later this year. Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 is scheduled for release on May 4th 2018. Part 2 is due for release on May 3rd 2018.
