The Shape Of Water LFF Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

2. Terrific Use Of Music

The Shape Of Water Sally Hawkins
Fox Searchlight

Though this film is a visual feast first and foremost, del Toro has also served up some fantastical musical accompaniments to boot.

Especially charming is the use of jazz legend Benny Goodman's back catalogue, which Elisa plays for the creature and becomes a poignant means for the pair to bond. Del Toro uses jazz music in some truly joyous and unexpected ways during the film, though they're just too damn good to spoil.

That's not to forget the marvellous original score by the brilliant Alexandre Desplat, either, which while perhaps paling in comparison to the use of Goodman's music, nevertheless adds plenty of soul to the story.
