The Single Biggest Mistake Each MCU Film And TV Show Has Made

39. The Incredible Hulk - The Badly-Structured Story

Avengers Endgame Thor

The Incredible Hulk is the most forgotten MCU film, and for a while an uncredited Robert Downey Jr cameo was all that really linked it to the others. Is it worth seeking out? Well, unless you're a completionist, not really.

It's definitely better than 2003's Hulk, in fairness. The film does do a far better job with the Jade Giant than most other MCU properties - they haven't got him right since 2012's The Avengers, let's face it - while the main villain and action scenes are very solid, but as a story the film is a complete mess and this is the main thing that holds it back (although Edward Norton's terrible performance as Bruce Banner didn't help either).

Banner just doesn't develop enough throughout the film and it jarringly changes focus in the final act. Most of the film is about Bruce looking for a cure to his condition, but come the third act this goal is suddenly forgotten, and it instead becomes about his battle with Abomination (Tim Roth, who does a jolly good job with a fairly under-written part).

Also, just before the Battle of Harlem, Bruce's scientist friend Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) is seen starting to transform into Marvel supervillain The Leader and this set-up was paid off... well, it will be paid off in Captain America: New World Order, 16 years later.

It's clear as day that Marvel Studios didn't put much effort into the story of this one.
