The Suicide Squad: 22 WTF Moments

16. Polka Dot Man's Insane, Oedipal Backstory

The Suicide Squad Harley Quinn

One of The Suicide Squad's undeniable breakout characters is Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), who earns the audience's sympathy courtesy of his deeply effed-up backstory.

He reveals early on that his mother worked for S.T.A.R. Labs and experimented on him and his siblings when they were children in an attempt to turn them into metahumans, causing some of them to die.

Polka Dot Man survived and was cursed with "polka dot powers," meaning he needs to expel polka dots from his body twice per day or he risks dying.

And to give it all an oedipal spin, Polka Dot Man sees his mother everywhere and even imagines her when fighting enemies.

This occurs three times throughout the film: he envisions the members of the Suicide Squad as resembling his mother, as well as women he dances with at a bar, and even the gigantic Starro during the film's climax.

Well done, James Gunn, for convincing a movie studio to give you hundreds of millions of dollars to bring this insane character arc to life.
