The Tax Collector Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs
3. The Occasionally Amusing Banter
Most of the movie's best moments aren't so much its "tense" showdowns or bloody gunfights, but the simple, relaxed banter between David and Creeper as they cruise around LA.
Though the dialogue throughout Ayer's script is a far cry from the inspired vulgarity of Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena's chit-chat in End of Watch, the vocal back-and-forth does provide a refreshing breather from the more tiresome genre tropes.
Hearing Creeper wax lyrical about his keto diet several times throughout the film is hilarious, not to mention the memorable moment where he playfully quips, "We killing anybody today? I got nice f**king shoes on."
While there's certainly not enough of this knowingly heightened badass dialogue on offer, the moments where Ayer slows things down and trains the focus on basic human interaction are the only truly compelling parts of the entire movie.
