Top 10 Films About Extreme Weather!

1. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Love it or hate it, there€™s no two ways about it, The Day After Tomorrow has to be the greatest film about the dangers of extreme weather conditions. Infinitely better than last years 2012; Tomorrow is complete with excellent performances and fantastically realistic special effects. A cautionary tale of the dawning of a new ice age €“ after the effects of global warming have caught up with us €“ the film is more than a mere disaster movie, with its moral undertones. The fate of the world is down to man€™s ignorance about the effects of global warming €“ our direct responsibility. The narrative certainly packs a punch in this respect and I personally find the thought of the world ending in this way pretty daunting: not least due to the fact that I€™d like to think I€™d react similarly to the unfathomable Jake Gyllenhaal here, but in reality would most likely end up expiring in a truly un-heroic way €“ such as being sucked into a tornado or freezing solid instantly €“ like one of the dodgy extras€ If tales of our responsibility for the World€™s destruction doesn€™t take your fancy, Tomorrow can be viewed in purely entertainment terms as well. With awe-inspiring visual effects, the film hits the spot for audiences after high production values too. The blend of CGI imagery and live action stunts makes for extremely realistic viewing. This is best exemplified in the scenes where an enormous tsunami hits NYC and the streets swell with icy Atlantic water. Whilst the scene incorporates a lot of digital imagery, this is seamlessly coupled with real flooding. Harking back to the days before computer generated special effects, Tomorrow recalls the classical epics of Hollywood€™s Golden Era and is all the more successful because of this. With its combination of killer tornados, extreme hurricanes, incredible tidal waves, destructive floods and the commencement of a new ice age, Tomorrow is certainly the best film about extreme weather. Whilst we grapple with this weeks snow, lets just remain thankful that we don€™t have the rest of that little lot to deal with too!
