The Way Back Review: 5 Ups & 2 Downs

Ups...

5. The Unexpected Third Act

The Way Back Ben Affleck

As previously stated, much of this film is the standard (but still effective) underdog sports story for the first two-thirds of the movie. However, once you reach the third act, the film takes an unexpected turn out of the ordinary and gives it some needed unpredictability.

Once this portion of the movie starts, all the components and plot details set up in the first few acts begin coming to a head and the true message of the film is realized. It's also where the movie illustrates how it's far more than just a sports story. This is a story about more than just redemption or about proving others wrong.

This is where The Way Back's true intention of being a character study is unveiled. The retribution and redefined sense of purpose that Jack seeks can't be found on the basketball court. It has to come from somewhere internal, and the manner in which The Way Back illustrates this point is powerful and will surely resonate with many.
