The Week Of Review: 1 Up & 8 Downs
6. It's Painfully Unfunny
If you need any indication what level of comedy this movie is going for, the above image of a sleeping Chris Rock fondling the leg-stumps of an old amputee, believing them to be a firm pair of breasts, is all you need to see. Yup.
The film's true, fatal flaw is that it's simply not very funny at all. The tone is weirdly mean-spirited at times, with off-colour gags that feel like they belong in a Sandler comedy from two decades ago, openly joking about the disabled, racism, drug addiction, suicide and PTSD.
Sure, no subject should be off-limits in comedy, but the key is to actually make the jokes about these subjects funny. Instead it's embarrassingly witless and is making virtually no effort to say anything clever or witty at all.
