Thor: Ragnarok Review - 9 Ups & 4 Downs
4. There Are Some Surprises (And It Doesn't Take The Easiest Roads)
Given how over-zealous Marvel tend to be in their marketing, it's quite wonderful to see how many surprises there are in Ragnarok. Sure, there were some things in the trailers that probably didn't need to be shown, but there's not a great deal in there that really spoils how they fit into the wider narrative. In short, there's a lot of misdirection, and it's entirely welcome to have been duped.
The biggest surprise comes early in the film with a hilarious sequence that will be widely spoken about once it's been seen and might well be one of the funniest scenes in the entire MCU to date. But even the way the story plays out is pleasantly surprising (as is the tone and the commitment to comedy).
Basically, if you have expectations of how this story will play out, you're probably a lot wronger than you usually are. There are some things you'll have caught onto, but Marvel deserve a lot of credit for showing just about enough in the trailers to inspire discussion without ruining anything at all.
