Thor: The Dark World Announced
The title sure makes it sound ominous for Thor in his third big screen outing.
Thor 2 is Thor 2 no longer as Marvel announced at Comic Con yesterday that the soon to be filming sequel will be officially titled "Thor: The Dark World". Nice, dark title... with ominous overtones for the sequel, in the same way as The Empire Strikes Back did for Star Wars fans in the 80s. The announcement came at the same time Marvel revealed that the Captain America sequel would be titled "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and for us, it greatly pleases us that they have actually made an effort with the naming of these sequels and they won't just be Captain America 2 or Thor 2. Out of the two movies, Thor will be out of the gate first on November 8th, 2013. It will once again star Chris Hemsworth in his third big screen outing now as the God of Thunder with Tom Hiddleston (as Loki), Natalie Portman (as Jane Foster), Anthony Hopkins (as Odin), Jaime Alexander (Sif), Ray Stevenson (Volstagg), Idris Elba (Heimdall) and perhaps more reprising their roles from the original. There has also been one casting change with Zachary Levi replacing Joshua Dallas as Fandrall, one of the Warriors Three. Not a great deal is known about the sequel but we suspect it will involve The Enchantress and Skurge as the villains. In the Marvel comics Enchantress is an Asgardian Goddess experienced in the use of magic and seduction through her supernatural powers. In some ways she is the Catwoman of the Thor universe as she has regularly been an anti-hero in the universe, sometimes an ally but more often than not a villain. In one of her early stories she aids Loki by attempting to seduce and win the heart of Thor, distracting him whilst her ally Skurge the Executioner attempts to kill Jane Foster. This could well make up part of the plot for the Thor sequel. The Executioner secretly loves Enchantress and she knows it but is just stringing him along to do her bidding. Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige has hinted in the past that the new movie has Thor and Fosters love story at the forefront, so this seems like it could be the way they are going. Of course Mads Mikkelsen was previously offered the role of the unnamed villain and could have made a great Executioner but he had to decline the offer due to scheduling on NBC"s Hannibal revival. His replacement has not yet been cast. There have also been rumours that Charlize Theron was being courted by Marvel to play The Enchantress and the more we think about it, the more it sounds like this would make an epic plot. But it's all just speculation at this point and this is after all half the fun in the build-up to these comic book movies. Written by Robert Rodat and Don Payne and directed by Game of Thrones helmer Alan Taylor replacing Kenneth Branagh, Thor 2 is due November 15th, 2013 the second movie on Marvels upcoming slate after next Mays Iron Man 3.
