8. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2009)
For Tim Burton's first ever full-on musical, he bravely took on Stephen Sodenheim's Broadway classic
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and although not a perfect adaptation by any means, the gothically-minded director was (as you might've guessed) well-suited to the material - so much so that the finished film might be considered an absolute success. Depp is back in leading man role here, and admirably sings his way through the generally all-sung musical with Helena Bonham Carter (equally good) at his side. The dark story - as fans will know - is Tim Burton all over, and the director doesn't shy away from making sure that all the grub and dank of Victorian London makes its way onto the big screen - not to mention he didn't skimp out on the musical's surprisingly violent nature. There are points when the film feels like it's dragging slightly, and there's an ill-judged "holiday" sequence which threatens to undo the atmospheric tension, but overall,
Sweeney Todd remains an inspired adaptation.
