In our reboot heavy times, playing the younger version of an iconic character is a pretty sweet gig, as is getting a part in the next Star Trek (just ask Zachary Quinto). What a difference a decade makes, eh? In Star Trek: Nemesis, the last Starfleet movie before J.J. Abrams did his time-travelling reboot in 2009, Tom Hardy plays Shinzon, a clone of Picard who schemes his way to become leader of the Romulans. Fair play to the then-unknown - he got a part in a big movie, although that's as far as the praise goes. Quite what Hardy's going for here isn't clear. The film handwaves that he's a botched clone, so he doesn't have to be just a Patrick Stewart imitator, but in lieu of that he just snarls his way through the movie, speaking with a slow and vicious delivery in a vaguely proper British accent. It's all a bit naff, like the rest of the film, and wouldn't really have stuck in the memory if it wasn't for the fact this is part of a still-going franchise. Now he's got his own resurrected series to play in (Mad Max already has a sequel planned), he can hopefully put this first foray well and truly behind him.
